Farbstudie Kandinsky - Influenced by Fauvism and the constant intellectual conflict with the art world, Vassily Kandinsky became the pioneer of abstract painting. Born in Moscow in 1866, he studied law and economics before going to Munich in 1896 where he studied under Franz von Stuck among others. His first pictures were painted under the influence of Art Noveau, Russian folklore and Impressionism. In 1912, with his friends Klee, Macke and Marc, he formed the group of artists known as the "Blauer Reiter" after one of Kandinsky's pictures. His pictures opened the way for the release of colour and for abstract-expressionist compositions and improvisations. Kandinsky died in 1944 in Paris, where he had lived since his emigration in 1933.
