La Matete Gauguin - Paul Gauguin was born in Paris in 1848. Taken with Impressinism, he started painting while still pursuing his profession as a bank clerk. The artist was also shaped by the influence of Van Gogh and Pissarro. In 1891, Gauguin moved to Tahiti and later to Marquesas Islands, where died in 1903. This is where the artist found his individual style, large paintings with sharp contours in lively and strong colours. More and more Gauguin was inspired by the beauty and the magic of the South Seas and the impressive characters among the natives. His paintings are expressively erotic and Gauguin can very well be called the precursor of Expressionism and Fauvism.
